Basics of drawing process

what-do-you-do

Welcome to our second post. For sure some people working in the wire and cable industry is listening from friends or family, questions like these.

There are a lot of situations in our life when these kind of questions appears, and for sure to answers our friends, family or others is not easy or they felt not really satisfied with our answer. Unfortunately, we are talking about terms and concepts far away of the people not involved in our business.

I meet this situation a few times in my live and I use to define it, as follows:

Generally the wire comes from a continuous cast process, and the diameter of it is depending on the material and the application. From this cast, that is not really accurate, we can reduce the diameter as much as needed using drawing dies.

This process is usually a cold process and during this reduction of diameter there is no scrap of material, the reduction is transformed in elongation.

My favorite sentence to describe this process is usually as follows:

You have to introduce one meter of wire with a determined size in a machine with a set of drawing dies, and at the exit you meet few hundred meters or few thousands of meters depending on the requested diameter.

I agree this is not the most academic definition, but it sufficiently describes the process for people that have no idea about how the wire & cable is produced.

The drawing dies we are talking about, we should call them as a set of dies, and the diameter of each die should be according the cinematic of the machine.

The machine is perfectly designed and calculated to manage the wire during the process and more important, to manage the wire elongation every time goes trough a die.

The forces and frictions during this transformation produce an increase of temperature that can affect the properties of the wire, the dies or the machinery. For this reason we need to lubricate the process to reduce the friction and to keep the temperature of the materials under control.

Using this process you can produce a lot of different products depending the raw material you are using. Some of them can be as follows:

  • Electric copper or aluminum wire and cable
  • Communication cables
  • Wire bulbs
  • Staples & nails
  • Wire mesh and filters
  • Steel cables for multiple applications
  • Tubes & pipes in different materials
  • Scrubber products
  • Steel wool products
  • Tire cord
  • Catalytic converters for automotive
  • Saw wire
  • etc.

It is huge the quantity of product you can produce from a wire, using dies and drawing process. This is just a light approach, if you are interested to know more about, please contact us: info@fdmglobalsolutions.com
